World Record in 4km Individual Pursuit
American Ashton Lambie has set a new, groundbreaking world record for the 4km individual pursuit of 3:59.930 at the Aguascalientes Velodrome in Mexico, beating Italian Filippo Ganna’s former world record time of 4:01.934, set at the 2020 Berlin Track World Championships.
First Ever to go Sub 4min
Ashton Lambie was inspired by Roger Bannister, who was the first man to break the 4-minute mark for the mile in 1954. So when Ashton decided that he wanted to break Ganna’s world record, he chose the 4-minute barrier as his goal as well. While that barrier appeared unbreakable for years, equipment has gotten better and better. Lambie himself recognised it was “less of a dream and, I believe, more of an inevitability.”
